The OBSR Honours for Excellence in Investment comprise four awards, which are based on OBSR’s in-depth qualitative research and knowledge of the investment industry.
Outstanding Investor Honour
The Honour for Outstanding Investor is awarded to a fund manager or team who has produced exceptional returns over the long term – that is, at least 10 years – on behalf of their investors. The OBSR research team gives due consideration to the tenure, consistency of approach, risk-adjusted returns and assets under management of all eligible fund managers. Ultimately, however, this Honour identifies and rewards a generationally great investor from within the retail investment industry. There should be no question that the recipient has deserved the award but this is a once-in-a-career accolade – no fund manager will be allowed to win the Honour for Outstanding Investor more than once.
Outstanding New Talent Honour
The Honour for Outstanding New Talent is presented to a fund manager who has established a position in the market and who has the potential to achieve excellent and consistent long-term returns for their investors. The OBSR research team applies the same principles as for Outstanding Investor only over a shorter time period. OBSR has judged a five-year term to be appropriate in this instance as this will ensure potential winners have run money through different stages of the economic cycle and also demonstrated an intention to build a track record and franchise with their fund.
Outstanding Investment House Honour
The Honour for Outstanding Investment House is awarded to a fund group that has established a successful record in a range of asset classes or regions and which has built a significant presence in the retail market over the longer term. A high percentage of the overall stable of funds operated by the group will have met the criteria demanded for the individual manager Honours outlined earlier. However, the winning house will also have demonstrated a real and lasting commitment to the retail investment market by actively working to encourage investors to stay with their funds by refraining from opening and closing funds purely for marketing reasons and by ensuring it creates an environment in which its fund managers wish to work and indeed are able to flourish.
Outstanding Contributor to the Industry
The Honour for Outstanding Contributor to the Industry will be presented to an individual or organisation that has made a real difference to the retail investment industry. There is no timeframe over which this award is judged and the nominee could, for example, be a chief executive or other business leader, a publisher or other member of the media, a politician, industry campaigner or a member of a trade body.
